Alexander Cummings McWhorter Pennington, Jr. , was an artillery officer and brigadier general in the United States Army and a veteran of both the American Civil War and SpanishAmerican War.

Pennington was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Congressman Alexander Cummings McWhorter Pennington , the second cousin of New Jersey Governor and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives William Pennington , and the grandnephew of New Jersey Governor William Sandford Pennington .
